Seventeenth century English samplers represent the advent of a long tradition of sampler-making associated with the English educational paradigm.  The theme for the weekend of study will be how samplers and other needlework functioned as a teaching tool.  We will consider the possible rationale for choosing samplers for female education, how they were used as a teaching tool, how the format of the samplers could be significant, and how samplers could have served other uses within the elite culture of the girls who worked them.

The samplers worked in the 17th century can generally be described as polychrome band samplers.  They frequently include one to three alphabets, each worked in a different stitch.  It is less common, but not unusual, for them to also include a verse and/or a section of whitework.  As an initial introduction to the topic it would be helpful to develop a careful familiarity with 17th century English samplers,
